With the main facade dating back to 1922 and the building itself classified as a historical monument, the old theatre has been completely renovated while the interior has been updated with the latest technology. The exterior of the National Theatre has been extended on both sides to accommodate technical rooms and office space. In addition, the stage tower at the back of the building has been raised by another five meters. These newly constructed elements are punctuated by lines on the exterior, thus continuing the structure of the historic main building. On the right, an advertising banner and LED displays have been added to provide visitors with information on current productions, just like the great musical theaters in Times Square in New York.
While the external facade is inspired by the historic appearance of the building, the interior has been completely redesigned and renovated by Piero Lissoni and equipped with the most cutting-edge technology.
